A Matter of BALANCE

Managing Concerns about Falls

A FREE weekly program
Begins
Monday, January 23, 2012
1:00 pm—classes held each Monday @ 1:00pm
Come to one class, come to all!

Occasional falls are something that we experience throughout our lives. When we are young, falls may cause us little difficulty. However, as we get older, a fall may have more serious consequences. We may recover from a fall more slowly, may be unable to carry our usual activities and may even lose our independence. Even if we recover from our physical injuries, the emotional damage caused by a fall may not be so easy to overcome. Paradoxically, by trying to prevent falls through a decrease in activity we may, in fact, increase our chances of falling.

A MATTER of BALANCE is a research based program that has been offered to over 30,000 people in 37 states. During the eight, one week sessions, we will examine different ways to overcome our fear of falls and learn how to prevent them. Unlike some other program, A MATTER of BALANCE approaches this problem by examining a number of different factors. An emphasis is placed on improving your balance and decreasing your fear of falling. During the class participants learn to:

View falls as controllable

Set goals for increasing activities

Make changes to reduce fall risks in the home and community

Exercise to increase strength and balance

Examine physical factors that may effect balance

Explore thoughts and concerns about falling

Develop the tools necessary to avoid falls

This class is designed for ANYONE who is concerned about falling and is willing to participate in a group setting. The permission of a doctor is NOT required as the exercise component of the program can be modified to meet the needs of a wide range of abilities.

We look forward to seeing you Monday, Jan. 23rd @ 1:00 pm or any Monday there after.

Schedule of Worship October, November, December 2011

OCTOBER

SUNDAY, October 9— Heritage Festival Sunday
8:30 am Rev. Dr. Chris Petrak—Quiet meditation

10:00 am Rev. Dr. James Scott
An abbreviated service, mainly a few hymns, a prayer, and few minutes for parishioners to share joys as summer ends and the fall begins.

SUNDAY, October 16—10:00 am Rev. Robert Hamm
Sermon, “Allegiances in Conflict,” based on Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, (1:1-10) and Matthew 22:15-22, explores the struggle to live faithfully in contemporary culture.

SUNDAY, October 23—10:00 am Rev. Dr. James Scott
Sermon, "When Friendship Sours". What should be our response as Christians when friendship sours? What are some basic steps to maintain healthy friendship? The two-sidedness of friendship complicates how we maintain relationships; what is the role of honest communication and how does forgiveness enhance friendship? Are there some spiritual guidelines that help us to move on when we have failed in friendship? Can a genuine friendship deteriorate to such an extent it is not worth fixing?

SUNDAY, October 30—Rev. Dr. James Scott
Sermon "Can Families Blend?" Blended families is a modern concept that is difficult to define or live out. What do we mean when we speak of blended families? How do we deal with "baggage" of earlier relationships that is often brought to a new relationship? How do we start fresh, without comparing partners? What should we expect when going into a second or third marriage? Does the Bible say second or third marriages are inherently weak, and to be avoided, or is the matter left to individuals to decide? How can prayer help a couple mature, understand, and expand boundaries of trust.
